Frequently Asked Questions About DNA Testing
What types of parentage testing do you offer?
We routinely perform a broad range of paternity and DNA identity tests.
The following are some of the parentage tests we offer:
- Fully accredited paternity testing for legal purposes
- Paternity DNA test kits – these are convenient when you just want the results, but do not need them for legal purposes.
- A grandparent DNA test which can confirm a grandparent relationship or paternity when the father is unavailable.
- Prenatal paternity testing – used for determining parentage before a child is born.
Can your DNA change over time?
No. Your DNA is the same throughout your lifetime.
Do I need a doctor’s or lawyer’s order for a DNA paternity test?
No, however you may need a doctor’s order if you reside in the state of New York. If you live in New York, give us a call for more information. If minor children will be tested for a legal DNA test, a legal guardian must authorize the test.
Can any of my medications affect my DNA test results?
No. DNA cannot be altered by medications, drugs, alcohol, or age.
Do you have clinics close to my home?
With over 6,000 clinics nationwide, the national average for one of our convenient clinics is normally within 8 miles of your location. Appointments are available 6 days a week (7 in some areas), and our DNA customer service is open 24 hours a day.
How do I get a legal DNA paternity test?
Simply call or e-mail us, and one of our DNA case managers will set up a test for you.
Can I use the results in court?
We use labs that are fully certified, and we follow strict chain-of-custody rules so your results can be used in court. However, your DNA test results are admissible in court only if you order the fully accredited, legal version of the test. Results of home DNA tests cannot be used in court because the tested person’s identity cannot be verified.
Is the mother always tested?
No. The test can reveal parentage without testing the mother. Because we have the ability to test the maximum amount of markers (29), we guarantee attaining the highest possible probability whether the mother is tested or not. Our selected lab is one of the few labs in the world where a 99.99% or 0% probability is guaranteed without the mother being tested. When the mother participates, we are able to subtract her contribution to the child’s DNA before comparison to the potential father’s pattern. Most other labs charge for this additional testing. We never charge for additional testing when required.
Will getting a blood transfusion alter my DNA?
No. A blood transfusion will not change your DNA.
Can I test at home?
Yes – you can use one of our convenient home DNA testing kits. These tests are useful when you want answers but do not need a legally-certified result. Choose a legal test when you need legal validation or are concerned with the possible motives of the other parent. Both tests have the same, accurate results.
Do I need consent for testing if I use DNA home testing?
No, you are not required to obtain consent when using a DNA testing kit.
How long does DNA testing take?
We are typically able to provide results to you within 48 hours after we receive your samples at no additional cost. Rush testing is available at an additional cost.
Does a child have to be a certain age to have a DNA paternity test?
No. There is no minimum age requirement. A cheek swab sample is simple to take and is painless.
Do you protect my confidentiality?
Of course. We keep your information in the strictest confidence. It will not be released to anyone other than the tested parties and their named representatives without a written order.
I have selected a certified paternity test that I can use for legal purposes. What do I need to bring to my appointment?
Adults must bring a photo ID such as a driver’s license or state I.D., in some cases a social security card, a picture of the child, and payment for the DNA test unless different payment arrangements have been made with your DNA case manager. Some clinics require a birth certificate or social security card as proof of I.D. for the child. Since this varies from clinic to clinic, please contact your DNA case manager if you are unable to provide these documents. We can then set up your appointment at a clinic that does not require these forms of I.D.
Are blood tests more accurate than a DNA test using a mouth swab?
No. DNA is in every cell of your body so extracted DNA is the same regardless of the method.
When can you conduct a prenatal DNA test?
A prenatal DNA test is most often used from the 14th week of pregnancy through the 24th week.
Can you test DNA from objects if the test subject is unavailable?
Yes. We can test on a variety of objects including pop cans, gum, cigarettes, condoms, bed sheets, clothing (including underwear, panties, bras, etc.) toothbrushes and hair. Any bodily fluid such as semen, blood, or saliva may be tested. The ability to extract DNA will depend on the type of sample, the age of the sample, and how it has been stored.
